Chloramphenicol is an antibiotic very effective against a wide variety of bacteria that is used in veterinary medicine. Due to well known potential human harmful reactions such as aplastic anemia and because of the global bacteria resistance concern, Chloramphenicol has been banned for food-producing animals treatment in Europe, USA and other countries. However, this antibiotic is still widely used in several countries because it is inexpensive, readily available and especially efficient. In Russia, its maximum permitted level in milk is 10 µg/kg (ppb).
